Oral and maxillofacial surgery treats a broad spectrum of diseases, injuries, and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws, and both the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. Recognized internationally and by the American Dental Association as a dental specialty, it addresses complex craniofacial cases that require a high level of expertise.
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons undergo rigorous training beyond dental school, including a minimum of four years in a hospital-based residency program accredited by the American Dental Association. They train alongside peers in general surgery, anesthesiology, and other specialties like otolaryngology and plastic surgery, focusing extensively on the hard and soft tissue of the face, mouth, and jaws. This unique training equips them with the expertise to handle complex surgical cases involving these areas.
