Founded in 1929, the American Board of Orthodontics is the oldest and most respected specialty board in dentistry. Its mission is to elevate orthodontic standards, educate the public about the profession, and protect the public from unqualified practitioners.
ABO’s Key Objectives:
Assess the knowledge and clinical skills of orthodontic program graduates through exams and issue time-limited certifications.
Administer recertification exams throughout a Diplomate’s career to ensure ongoing proficiency.
Support the enhancement of orthodontic education at graduate, postgraduate, and continuing levels.
Advocate for orthodontic certification globally.
Becoming Board Certified
Orthodontists undergo a demanding process to become board certified, including passing rigorous written and clinical exams and undergoing a thorough review of their credentials. This process typically spans five to ten years. To maintain their status, certified orthodontists must recertify every ten years.
What Does Board Certification Mean?
A board-certified orthodontist, or Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, has voluntarily met high standards of knowledge and clinical skill set by their peers. Achieving board certification demonstrates an orthodontist’s commitment to excellence and continuous improvement in the field of orthodontics.
